Appearance: The trait that stands out most for Maya is her bright red hair. Obviously this is not a natural colour, but she's kept it this colour for years now so it might as well be. Her natural colour is the same as her eyes - chocolate brown. She's rather small in height and stature, but don't let it fool you- she may only be five foot one or two, but it helps loads with her martial arts training.
Personality: The first thing one should know about Maya is, simply, not to mess with her. Despite her appearance, she isn't the kind of girl to be friendly toward anyone, and tends to prefer being alone, mostly because that's all that she's used to. She's extremely guarded and tries not to trust anyone, mainly because of her past experiences. Though she's not a horrible person, and doesn't usually pay enough attention to others or seek them out to really be considered a bully or anything like that. She is seen as having anger issues, even though this really isn't the case- not that she doesn't have some, but they certainly aren't as dramatic or dangerous as what her father had.

Even though her skills are less than desirable and certainly can make people nervous and wary around her, Maya does have one skill and hobby that she keeps to herself- cooking. Maya is a fantastic cook, mostly because that's what she always did growing up, and has quite a bit of confidence in her abilities as well. Even so, she does not let this particular skill be known, because she fears being seen as weak. That's a big thing for Maya- weakness. She hates it. She associates it with her mother's death, for the most part, and is afraid of it as well. Her mother's death has also caused her to be afraid of any attachment to others, which is another reason for her reclusion- she's afraid of losing the people close to her, and believes that if she keeps people away from her, she won't feel that same pain again.

History: Maya Elesa Ross was born into a rather troubled family. Her father was abusive, mostly to her mother, and had horrible anger issues. Her mother was always working so as to escape her father. She was always an only child, so she had minimal attention from anyone. As a child, she would always be stuck cooking the meals for her family because her mother wasn't home to do so, and surprisingly, she enjoyed it. She became very good at it, too, because of this. It was the only time she had at home that she was occupied and didn't have to listen to her father's yelling.

Unfortunately, things only got worse from there. Maya's father began drinking more and more. One night, when Maya was just about seven, he hurt Maya's mother to the point of giving her som kind of head injury, and she was only in the hospital for a few hours before she died. Maya's father was sent to prison, but when the police came to get Maya and put her in custody for a while, she was gone.

Always having a rather fiery and rebellious personality anyway, Maya soon turned to a life of crime. She would train late into the night in both martial arts and lock-picking, and ever since age thirteen she had gained close to a master's level in both, having started early on to be able to (or so she thought) fight back against her father, and had been relentless in her training once having a goal to work to (which was basically staying alive while living on the streets). She did well for herself, stealing and getting by on the streets. But she was lucky too many times, it seemed, and was caught by the police when she was around fourteen. She was sent to a juvenile detention center for a while and then, at age sixteen, when the keepers of the center noticed her skills with cooking, she was ordered to find some kind of job. She chose a job as a cook in the café as that was the only thing she found tolerable (and secretly enjoyed, so long as the customers or staff didn't pay attention to the fact that (or know at all) she was cooking the food. It seems to be changing her, if only a bit, but she's still very wary around 'kind' people and tends to be more guarded at times than she should be, mostly because of her life on the streets. She's still a rebel and likes to cause mischief, but she doesn't really pick fights anymore. Now at nineteen, she owns her own apartment, a small one, and uses the money she makes working full-time at the café to pay her rent.
